A Word from our Founder
Jan Pedersen Schiff
Welcome to our 30th Anniversary Concert Season, 2016/2017,"Let's Sing!" It was in fall of 1986 when I moved to Marin from Southern California. I had been teaching voice and directing choirs at both Los Angeles City College and Long Beach City College, conducting a semi-professional chorus, the Hollywood Chorale, and was experiencing a rather successful music career, when something inside was calling me north. I landed in Mill Valley, found a cute little cottage on Mt. Tam, took daily hikes down to Muir Woods, and found heaven! (and soon a husband!) To support myself, I advertised my private vocal studio, and then in January of 1987 started a women's chorus at Strawberry Recreation. That founding chorus became Wings of Song, and the rest is history.
These are good times. Dedicated to choral excellence, I have been fortunate to work with great professional staff. Our Singers Marin Vocal Arts Academy for youth continutes to expand. We feel that the work we are doing with children is vitally important to the future lives of this next generation. Choral singing develops so much more than just musical proficiency. It gives the children a wide range of vital life skills: confidence, deportment, stage presence, focus, listening skills, mental agility, team work, a sense of achievement and self-worth. We are dedicated to developing the individual talents of all our youth, as they grow and become strong singers and valuable contributors to society.
In addition, our adult program is also vital to the well-being of our community. Singing helps to relieve the stress of daily life. It's really hard to sing and not be happy! And happy people help others! Won't you join us this season, either as a singer, donor, or concert attendee, as we "touch the heart with beauty, and uplift the spirit with joyful song!"
