les etoiles |
les etoiles, meaning “the stars” in French, is a chorus for high school girls with excellent musicianship and vocal skills. An audition is required in order to participate in this program. Starlights and Celestial Voices members may audition into this group upon graduation from their programs, or individuals that are just beginning their membership with SingersMarin may schedule their own audition.
In this program, young women are expected to have strong ear training and sight singing skills, and high levels of both techniques are still taught. They also continue their music theory training. They perform difficult repertoire of all styles, past piece ranging from Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Magnificat to Mozart’s Kyrie for Five Sopranos to contemporary compositions by living composers to intricate a cappella arrangements of popular tunes.
The women in these programs are part of the highest level of performance. In recent years, they have concertized in Scandinavia, traveled to Bremen, Germany and received a bronze medal in the Choir Olympics, performed the national anthem for thousands at AT&T Park during a San Francisco Giants game, sang as the opening act for the evening concert of the A Cappella Summit, and were featured at the opening festivities at Filoli Estate. In the Spring semester of 2006, they also had the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall as part of a 160-voice chorus and were featured as a small ensemble with Jan Pedersen Schiff as conductor. Throughout the semester they also perform community outreach concerts for retirement homes and health care facilities in order to give others the joy of song. At the end of the Fall semester, the les etoiles will perform with all the other SingersMarin choruses in a special Holiday Concert at the Marin Center’s Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium.
This high level of training and performance prepares these young women for auditions at their current high school, college admission and scholarship auditions, as well as future professional chorus auditions. The touring and competition experience teaches them professionalism and poise. The relationships formed prepare them for life.
