The “Stars” of SingersMarin are the youth choruses. Divided by age levels and experience, these ensembles teach valuable musical skills through a repertoire of varied musical styles, building confidence in performance as they share their gift of song with others. The singers are accepted into the chorus through an audition process.

Starlights is the entry level chorus for girls, ages 9 through middle school. The audition will include singing the first verse of America the Beautiful for memory, and a second song of their choice. It will also include singing the Do Re Mi scale, and testing for pitch matching memory. An interview with the instructor will determine the student’s commitment and readiness for participation.

During rehearsals, the instruction will include vocal technique, ear training, and music fundamentals. After one semester or at age 10, girls may audition for the advanced chorus for their age group, Celestial Voices, or remain in the Starlights program.

 Starlights has performed throughout Marin County at Farmer’s Markets, the Marin County Fair, Northgate Mall, as well as caroling during the holiday season at Ghirardelli Square in downtown San Francisco. Throughout the semester they also perform for retirement homes and health care facilities in order to share with others the gift of song. Performances this season will include a collaboration with the Golden Gate Opera in “Hansel & Gretel” at the Marin Center in October. Two concerts for the general public are also scheduled during the year: a special Holiday Concert with all of SingersMarin’s youth and adult choruses in December, and a combined youth chorus concert in May.

In Starlights, these young girls begin to develop their potential as musicians while making new friends along the way. The lessons of professionalism and poise, as well as the relationships that these young ladies forge during their time with Starlights can last a lifetime.
