The “Stars” of SingersMarin are the youth choruses. Divided by age levels and experience, these ensembles teach valuable musical skills through a repertoire of varied musical styles, building confidence in performance as they share their gift of song with others. The singers are accepted into the chorus through an audition process.

les étoiles is an advanced level chorus for teenage girls. Singers should have prior musical training and be motivated toward learning challenging repertoire. The audition includes singing from memory “The Star Spangled Banner”, and two other songs of contrasting style (one piece from the classical repertoire encouraged). It will also include a short exam on basic music fundamentals, singing diatonic and chromatic scales, pitch matching, and sight-singing. An interview with the instructor will determine the student’s commitment. During rehearsals, the instruction will include vocal technique, advanced ear training, and music theory. The singers perform music, both a cappella and accompanied, in three and four-part harmony. In 1997, members of the first chorus gave themselves the name les étoiles which is French for “the stars”. They continue to hold true to their name as they shine for audiences locally and internationally. Their first tour was the Kiwanis Festival in Vancouver, BC in 1999. In 2001, they participated in the World Projects International Choral Festival in Sydney, Australia, singing in the world famous Opera House and winning a gold award in the festival competition. In 2003, they did a concert tour through Scandinavia, performing in the communities along the southern coast of Norway, and then on to Finland for several more days of concertizing. In 2004, they took part in the Choir Olympics in Bremen Germany, winning a bronze medal. The next trip was in 2006 to New York to sing in Carnegie Hall. In 2008 they won a silver certificate at the World Choir Games in Graz Austria, and in 2009, received 2nd place in both the historic and folk categories at the Golden Gate International Youth Choral Festival. They are looking forward to their next tour to South Africa in the summer of 2010, where they will participate in the IHLOMBE International Choral Festival.
At home, they have sung the National Anthem for the Giants and the Oakland A’s, the Essurance Tennis Classic, and for numerous other occasions. Singing engagements throughout the year include community events, benefits and holiday parties, in addition to performances for the elderly at retirement homes and health care facilities.
Two large concerts for the public are scheduled during the year: the combined youth and adult choruses of SingersMarin present a special Holiday Concert at the Marin Center Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in December, and the combined youth choruses in May. Beyond the musical benefits of membership in les étoiles, these young women learn the art of becoming a professional performer. | Spring Start Date: | January 14, 2013 | | Rehearsal Venue: | Mt.
